Chromium is a trace element. Its role in human metabolism is still not fully understood.

The chromium compound chromium picolinate – from which chromium is absorbed particularly effectively – has been permitted for use as a so-called novel food ingredient since 2011. (This refers to foods or food ingredients that were not consumed to a significant extent in the European Community before May 15, 1997. These require EU approval, which includes a safety assessment.)

Regarding the safety of chromium picolinate, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) stated that there are no concerns as long as no more than 250 micrograms of chromium per day are additionally ingested via food supplements and fortified foods.

The German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) recommends that food supplements should not contain more than 60 micrograms of chromium per day , as other foods can also be enriched with chromium. This maximum recommended amount is exceeded by more than three times in the product you described, which provides 200 micrograms of chromium per day.

The fundamental question is what you expect from taking chromium supplements. In 2014, the EFSA (European Food Safety Authority) determined that chromium has no proven benefit for healthy individuals. Chromium supplements are primarily advertised as aiding weight loss and muscle building. There is insufficient scientific evidence to support these claims.

According to the European Health Claims Regulation, since 2010 only the following two statements are permitted for chromium: “Chromium contributes to normal macronutrient metabolism” and “Chromium contributes to the maintenance of normal blood glucose levels.” Therefore, chromium is frequently an ingredient in dietary supplements for diabetics.

The German Nutrition Society estimates that an intake of 30-100 micrograms of chromium per day is sufficient for adults. Chromium is found in both plant and animal foods. Staple foods such as bread, potatoes, milk, and meat contain between 1 and 10 micrograms of chromium per 100 g. Leafy green vegetables, nuts, and mushrooms, for example, have higher levels. There is no evidence of insufficient chromium intake in the German population.
